Finishings price listWhat is Flamed Scratch?
Flamed scratch is a stone surface finish that combines the rough, matte texture of a flamed finish with the regular parallel lines of a scratched finish.
Description
Flamed Scratch Finish | Matte, Linear Textured Surface for Facades, Landscaping and Feature Walls
Flamed scratch is a stone surface finish that combines the rough, matte texture of a flamed finish with the regular parallel lines of a scratched finish. The result is a directional, textured surface with a modern architectural look and more grip than polished surfaces.
What Are Flamed and Scratched Finishes?
- Flamed: the stone surface is exposed to intense, controlled heat, and the different behaviour of its minerals slightly opens and roughens the surface. The result is a coarser, matte texture with more friction. Flaming usually makes the stone colour lighter and more matte than polished.
- Scratched: many, usually narrow lines are created on the surface; they can be regular, parallel and dense, adding direction and visual rhythm.
Appearance
In the photos on this page, the stone surface is covered with regular horizontal parallel lines, while the natural veins of the stone remain visible beneath the texture. Under side light the surface creates fine shadows, and depending on installation direction it emphasises the horizontal or vertical extent of the surface.
Applications
- Modern facades and entrance walls
- Decorative, textured interior and exterior walls
- Parts of landscaping, walkways and entrances that need a less slippery surface
- Combination with polished or honed pieces of the same stone for texture contrast
Which Stones Can Be Finished This Way?
Flaming is mostly applied to crystalline, dense stones such as granite, whose crystalline structure allows heat to create texture on the surface. Not all stones react the same way, so before a project order, see a flamed scratch sample on the stone you have chosen.
Selection and Installation Tips
- Define line direction (horizontal or vertical) on the facade drawing; rotating pieces at random during installation breaks the design continuity.
- On veined stones, align the scratch lines with the vein direction so the surface does not look busy.
- The rough surface holds more dust and is not suitable for kitchen counters.
- Combined finishes usually cost differently from a simple polished surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is flamed scratch anti-slip?
The rough flamed texture has more friction than polished, but slip resistance depends on the stone type, finish depth and site conditions.
How is it different from a plain flamed finish?
A plain flamed finish is uniformly rough, while flamed scratch adds regular parallel lines for a more directional look. See the flamed finish and the scratched finish as well.
To order, send the stone name, dimensions, quantity, thickness and line direction. See other finishes on the stone finishes page.
